The Syllabus

What You Will Train

Multi-Engine flying rewards precision, sound decision making, and commands respect. We utilize Ground school, Flight training, and real world scenario based training in a high performance twin to prepare you for the next level of your flying career!

Ground School

Multi-Engine Ground School

Before the flying starts, we cover the knowledge areas the FAA ACS requires for your multi-engine rating:

  • Multi-engine aerodynamics: Vmc, the critical engine & single-engine performance
  • Baron B55 systems: props & feathering, retractable gear, fuel crossfeed & electrical
  • Performance & limitations: weight & balance, accelerate-stop / accelerate-go & single-engine service ceiling
  • Key V-speeds: Vmc (red line), Vyse (blue line), Vxse & Vsse
  • Engine failure & emergency procedures: identify, verify, feather
  • Required ACS knowledge areas & oral exam prep

Flight Training

Multi-Engine Flight Training

In the Baron, you fly the maneuvers and procedures covered on the multi-engine checkride:

  • Normal, crosswind & short-field takeoffs and landings
  • Steep turns, slow flight & stall recognition
  • Simulated engine failures on takeoff, after liftoff & in flight
  • Vmc demonstration
  • In-flight engine shutdown, feathering & restart
  • Single-engine approaches, landings & go-arounds
  • Emergency descents & a mock checkride to ACS standards

Know Before You Start

A few things worth knowing as you plan your multi-engine training.

What you need to begin

For a Multi-Engine Add-On: at minimum a Private Pilot certificate and a current medical. For the MEI: a current Flight Instructor certificate and a multi-engine rating. An instrument rating is not required for the add-on, but without one your multi-engine privileges will be limited to VFR. Additionally, all Multi-Engine program participants will be required to review the provided study packet prior to their first day of program, and will be expected to take a very brief & basic quiz upon their first day of training / ground school.

How long it takes

The FAA sets no minimum flight hour requirement for a multi-engine add-on - you train until you meet the proficiency standard. Most students can expect to finish their multi-engine add-on in approximately 8-12 Hrs of flight time, although times vary by student and may increase if students opt for additional multi-time building opportunities. Students doing an Accelerated Multi-Engine Add-on can expect to take approximately 5-7 days. For those seeking an MEI rating you are required to obtain 15 Hrs of Multi-Engine PIC time prior to qualifying for the rating, you can expect to fly approximately 17 Hrs (including checkride) in our MEI program with the course taking approximately 1-2 weeks for most pilots. Accelerated MEI Students can expect to complete the program in about 5-8 Days.

Time that really counts!

Unlike lower-powered multi-engine trainers such as the Piper Seminole, the Beechcraft Baron provides a more realistic multi-engine training experience. Its wider engine spacing and higher performance create more pronounced asymmetric handling and Vmc characteristics, requiring pilots to develop precise rudder control and a thorough understanding of engine-out procedures. While modern trainers such as the DA42 use FADEC and automatic systems like auto-feathering to reduce pilot workload, the Baron puts the pilot in direct control. Managing throttles, propellers, and mixtures teaches students to actively understand and manage the aircraft rather than relying on automation. That being said N3018S is no slouch in the technology or modern conveniences department as she still features a full glass cockpit and safety features like ADSB traffic and weather etc.

The result is a deeper understanding of multi-engine aerodynamics, systems, and aircraft management—building skills that transfer confidently to a wide range of higher-performance aircraft and prepare students for the next level in their flying career.
